Astigmatism

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a condition in which the eye does not bend light properly. A normal eye has a spherical cornea, which the light passes through to reach the retina. This provides a clear visual of the object you are looking at.

With astigmatism, the cornea’s shape is irregular. When the light passes through, it does not move along one clear path to the retina, Instead, it can hit more than one focal point, which makes anything you might look at blurry.

Signs of Astigmatism

Blurry or distorted images are the most common symptoms of astigmatism, but they’re not the only ones. You might notice you have double vision and poor night vision. You’ll also likely spend a lot of time squinting and suffering from eyestrain and headaches.

How Astigmatism Is Diagnosed

Astigmatism can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. The optometrist will assess the curvature of your cornea and more to determine if astigmatism is present. Our team at Visionary Eye Center can provide this comprehensive eye exam – or you can search for “eye exam near me” if you live in a different location.

Treatment for Astigmatism

With the right prescription, people with astigmatism can use both contact lenses and eyeglasses to help clear their vision. Laser surgery is also available to help reshape the cornea. This is a great option for those with mild or moderate astigmatism that wish for more permanent results. Our team can help you sort through the treatment options available to you so that you can make the best choice.
